Storybook Favorites

This is my third post for a mythology and folklore class I am auditing in order to sharpen my writing skills and pass the time during quarantine. The assignment is to choose 3 storybook designs from past classes and discuss them with you. Here is my list:

  • Dungeons and Decisions
    • I was drawn to this because it reminded me of all the Dungeons and Dragons my ex used to play when we were younger. The fact that it is a choose your own adventure story is an added bonus. I can reread each story from the perspective of different characters and get different ending.
  • Dear Sun, Sincerly Moon
    • Once again, it was the title of the blog that first caught my attention. I am obsessed with the ying and yang of the sun and the moon. I even have them tattooed on my ankles. As I read through the sight, I loved how the different relationships between humans, religions and the sun and moon were described. As humans we are still trying to find the same balance that the sun and moon share; how to coexist and not over power one another.

  • Breaking News! Don Quixote a Hero?
    • This is one of the best ideas for rewriting a folktale. The author presented each section as a breaking news story. This gives the stories a feeling of relivence instead of just old stories in a dusty book. Of course Don Quixote is someone we have all hear of, but don't necessarily know more than he's a lady's man and shared similarities with the musketeers. These new stories tell about his everyday life and why he is such a beloved folk hero.
All three of these storybook sites offer inspirational ideas on what can be created in this class. Folktales can be rewritten as letters to the heavens. They can be breaking news or a game. The possibilities are endless, if only I open my mind to them.
