Possible Storybook Topics

  • Michigan Myths or at least Myths set in Michigan
    • Michigan is my home. It is an amazing place, shaped like a mitten with 5 Great Lakes. I would suspect that there are creation stories about those things. In my browsing, I found an article called Mysterious Michigan Myths and Urban Legends. It lists stories of a Dogman, The Higgins Lake Monster and the Crying Woman of Indian Village. Some of these are repeated on the Pure Michigan site as well. I even found an article of 14 Michigan Monster Myths on MLive. It might be fun to flesh out the stories, add dialog and create some campfire stories of my own.

    • Random Thought: How fun would it be to write a collection of myths from all 50 states? 
  • German Fairy Tales
    • My husband was stationed in Germany for four years. He loved it there and has always wanted to go back. I would like to teach my daughter some of the culture before that happens, and fairy tales seem like a good place to start. The text book offers 4 different units on the Grimm's Fairy Tales, but I am most interested in the story of Snow White. The Story of Briar Rose  and many others can be found on fairytalez.com. I found other's, such as Lily and the Lion on storryberries.com
  • Greek Mythology - Gods of today
    • Gods are supposed to be immortal, so if they really existed, what are they doing today? I would like to tell the stories of the Gods and Goddesses in a real world setting. The premise would be like a talk show of where are they now? Maybe Eros is now a marriage counselor. Maybe Aphrodite is a fashion model. Zeus could be a judge. The ideas could be endlessly fun.

  • The Fairy Kingdom
    • As a little girl, I collected unicorns and fairies. I have handed this love down to my daughters. Disney did an excellent job creating a fairy kingdom from Peter Pan's Tinker  Belle. I would like to do a more accurate one based on Irish folklore and other Fairy stories.

Looking at this list, I am most drawn to the Michigan Myths and Gods of Today ideas. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can narrow it down a little better.

For this assignment we were asked to read some articles about feedback and then write down our thoughts. I chose to read one article from each of the recommended sections. The results are as follows: To err is human – and a powerful prelude to learning Americans like to refer to the people who lived through and served in WW2 as the greatest generation. This may be because they struggled, learned from what was happening and then conquered. According to this article, this is the strategy we should be teaching our children in school. As both a higher education student and a parent, I tend to agree with this assessment. We have raised a generation of children who don't know how to struggle, and need safe spaces when things don't go their way. Parents go to schools and complain about teachers who give bad grades. Storytelling3: Lilith's Point of View

 This story is inspired by the story of Lilith written by Louis Ginzberg, from The Legend of the Jews. In the original version, you learn that Lilith was Adams first wife, but he sent her away because she would not submit to his will. This is her side of the story.  Lilith's Point of View "Hello. Welcome to my barren desert. I am Lilith, first wife of Adam. I was cast out of the garden of Eden for far lesser crimes than eating from the tree of knowledge. Yet my punishment is far more severe.
